MELINDA RISK, SABOO FINE JEWELS, ALESSA JEWELRY, ALEXANDER LAUT PERSONAL STORYTELLING
OCTOBER 15–17
Melinda Risk, Saboo Fine Jewels, Alexander Laut and Alessa Jewelry bring
four very different approaches to jewelry as personal storytelling. Melinda
Risk, working from her home studio, carves and reverse-paints tiny narrative
scenes — birds, foxes, moths — directly into rock crystal and mother-ofpearl,
then sets them in 22-karat and 18-karat gold with diamonds, each
piece its own private fable. Saboo Fine Jewels, a third-generation house
from Jaipur founded in 1935, takes the opposite approach: customcut
diamonds, shaped stone by stone for each design, in a workshop
that releases no more than 40 finished pieces a year. Alexander Laut,
a Moscow-born designer now based in Lisbon, builds his work around
large, rare investment-grade stones — colored diamonds, rubies, spinels,
alexandrites — choosing each one himself before any design begins,
typically resolving into a single bold cocktail ring rather than a matched set.
Alessa Jewelry, launched in 2009 by Alessandra Robles and Yuvraj Pahuja,
fuses her Guatemalan roots with his fifth-generation Indian jewelry heritage
into 18-karat gold work finished with hand-painted detailing.
