ALEX SEPKUS
MODERN JEWELRY
FEBRUARY 18-20
Alex Sepkus (1954–2021) was a Lithuanian-born goldsmith working in a category entirely his own. Trained in industrial design in Vilnius, where Soviet-era material scarcity pushed him toward carved stone, ivory, and enamel rather than gold, Sepkus brought that same obsession with surface and texture to his New York studio after emigrating in 1988. His signature technique — micro-carving executed under a microscope directly into 18-karat gold and platinum — builds dense, sculptural geometric patterns that evoke Byzantine mosaics while remaining unmistakably modern; no two pieces read quite the same under changing light. Sepkus’s New York atelier continues to produce his collection today, drawing from an archive of designs he left unreleased at the time of his death.
