PlatAfrica is South Africa’s premier platinum jewelry design and manufacturing competition, run for more than 25 years as a flagship program of Valterra Platinum. Each year, guided by a set theme, 60 to 90 professional designers and 120 to 150 students and apprentices hand-craft bespoke pieces in platinum sourced from South Africa’s Bushveld Complex — home to roughly 70 percent of the world’s known platinum reserves. Entries are judged on innovative design and technical mastery of a notoriously demanding metal, with the public voting for a People’s Choice award. Standout pieces can go on to international showcases and, in some cases, join curated capsule collections with blockchain-backed digital passports tracing each piece’s origin. More than 1,000 designers and jewelers have been trained through the program since its founding.
